College magazine

My college magazine cover and contents page.

These are the two magazine covers that I'm using as inspiration for my music magazine cover . The black and white cover image is something i really like about the 1st page, but i also really like the simple colour scheme on the 2nd page. The main thing i like about the smiths cover is the background image of the picture because it isn't just a plain colour which is something i really like for magazines.I really like the text and overall design of both covers and is something i will think of when making my cover.

Pictures

This is a sceenshot of my editing process, I've edited most of my pictures on photoshop to get them the way want to, mainly changing the tone and the colour. I then put these pictures onto my final publications. This picture is for my front cover.  What i was doing here was changing the colour, the brightness and the contrast to achieve a more polished look.

Questions

I've started working on my interview questions for the double page spread. This is the first draft of the article. I might change the questions round yet, add or change some.

The three double page spreads are what I'm using for inspiration for my music magazine. I really like the minimalistic design and colours of the Lady gaga page, especially the giant L across the article, that's really eye catching and works really well. The reason i picked the radar magazine is because i really like the background for their image which is not just a plain colour, which is something i want to do on my double page spread. I like the layout of the the vaccines double page spread, i like the bold heading and also the use of quotes in the colour scheme.  When i make my double page spread i will use a mix of all three of these pages as inspiration when designing and making.

music contents page

This is an example of Q contents page. A large amount of the page is taken up by a main picture of a band. The design is very simple, as well as a simple colour scheme. The page has a lot of text, it does have two pictures as well but it doesn't look to busy like other contents pages I've looked at. When i make my contents page i will use this for inspiration, as well as another page i looked at when making my college magazine which is a contents page from Spin magazine.

Double page spreaad 2

This is another double page spread for a music magazine.  Compared with the earlier one this one has a lot less text. The main image covers nearly both pages, and there is only a small amount of text. Although the heading for this page is very clear and visible whereas the other one wasn't.  The main image is of a band, the front man is placed in the middle of the pages and is more forward that the other two which makes it clear who he is.
The colour scheme is tinted a pale red colour, with pale white text. The band's outfits match very well with this, but are also eye catching because they stand out, such as the glitter and stripes.
There is 2 sets of text, the large one which introduces the band, this is in larger bold white and at a slight angle to make it eye catching.  The main body text is much smaller more formal text, which is times new roman font and black.
The title is placed at the bottom of the page over the main picture, its a more elegant text compared to the others. The makes it eye catching, when you look at the page my immediately focuses on the large  of the the title.

Double page spread

This double page spread is very minimalistic, it has a very simple design. The main article with the the text is on one page only while the other page is a picture only. There is limited colour, the text and picture are black and white, the only colour is the red L that covers the text. The text is a formal times new roman font, which i think emphasises the simple theme. I really like this idea, i like the colours and the simple design. It looks very professional and sophisticated, which means it will appeal to a wider audience. There isn't really anything that i don't like about this double page spread, when i make my music magazine, i will use this for inspiration as this is the sort of design i hope to achieve.

Music magazine

My second piece of coursework will be a music magazine. My task is to create a front cover, contents page and a double page spread and i will be using a minimum of 4 of my own images. I will again be using  DTP and image manipulation programme and i will continue to use this blog to record my progress.

Music magazines

Most music magazines have a target audience of young people, it also depends on the artists they are going to feature. Although Magazines such a Mojo have a older target audience because they feature older artists such as the Beatles, and a lot of rock from the 70's and 80's, music that appeals more to older people such as middle aged people.  If a magazine is going to have lots of posters in such as Kerrang their target market is teenagers who will put the posters in their rooms.
Where as a magazine such as NME will have a wide target audience because of the wide variety of content they have in their magazine, features that will appeal to younger and older people.

Font ideas

These are some fonts that i have been looking at for my college magazine. I used coolfonts to get these.

Music magazine research

Top magazines-  There are many different music magazine genres, such as rock, pop, hip hop, even surf rock.
The popular magazines, are one such as Kerrang, NME, Q, Rock Sound  Nme focuses on indie and rock music, and their target audience is around 16 and over more focusing on young adults rather than young teenagers. They also aim for anyone who is interested in they type of music they focus on , and its published weekly.
A really big music magazine is Kerrang, the focus on rock and screamo music. I think their target audience is mainly teenagers, they talk about a lot of bands with younger fans, and have many posters inside, which teenagers will use. It is also the UK's biggest selling rock magazine. It is published weekly.
The worlds most popular music magazine in Mojo. Their main focus is classic rock music. I think this magazine has a target audience 18 and above, as it focuses on older performers such as the Beatles.

Contents analysis

This is a contents page from Elle magazine. I really like the layout of this one, with the image and title at the top of the page, and the actuall text being the other half. This is something i would be interested in doing for my magazine. I like the simple colours of this one, it really works well with the top image,as its mainly black and white with a hint of other colour, Elle's being red, this is also something i would be interested in using in my magazine.

Contents analysis

This is a contents page from Kerrang Magazine.  This has a lot more text and colour on it compared to the last one i looked at. It has a lot of small text, but also has a few different images around the page. It does have one main image, which the the smaller ones are placed round this, and the main text. It has lot a lot to look at, the whole page is completely coverd with text or pictures. which is something i don't want when designing my magazine.

Contents analysis

This is an example of Spin Magazines contents page. I love the colour scheme and layout of this one. It's very minimalistic, which is something i am interested in for magazine. Again i really like the black, white and grey colours, this makes it look more colourful than just black and white. This is also something i would be interested in doing to add some colour to the magazine. I espically like how that page is more focused on the image, which takes up most of the page, and the actual text is very small and to the side.

Cover analysis

This is an example of NME magazine cover, it's a special edition so the cover image is in black and white, with only the masthead and sell lines in colour. The cover image is not a studio shot, so it doesn't have one block colour as a background it has buildings. I like the way this looks espically, with the black and white colour scheme. But i dislike the red for some of the text, it suits this magazine, but i personally like other colours with black and white.  Its very simple and has only one image, which i think works really well with the colour scheme. I also really like where they have placed the text, the very top, they very bottom, and across the middle of the cover image.
I would like my college magazine to be lightly based around this cover.
